the material matters

Bre is interested in what happens when familiar materials are given another life.

A piece of clothing, a discarded textile, or an overlooked fragment can carry evidence of where it has been. Colour, wear, stitching, fading and irregularity become part of its history and part of the artwork.

Rather than hiding those qualities, Bre works with them.

The resulting pieces are deliberately tactile. They ask to be looked at closely, where layers, seams, threads and small material decisions gradually reveal themselves.

Textile work changes the way an artwork occupies a room.

From across the space, a piece may read as an image. Closer inspection reveals the construction: a seam that shifts direction, a frayed edge left visible, layers of fabric beneath the surface, or hundreds of small decisions that could never be reproduced exactly.

That physicality is central to Bre’s practice.

In an increasingly digital visual culture, textile offers something different, an artwork whose material history remains visible.

For collectors, that means the work can continue to reveal itself over time, not simply as an image on a wall, but as an object with a physical presence and a story embedded in its making.

Alongside her fine-art practice, Bre also creates personalised embroidered gifts for clients in Vancouver and the Lower Mainland.

This work grew from the same appreciation for textiles, craftsmanship and making by hand, but serves a very different purpose: creating personalised pieces for homes, celebrations and client gifting.
